Name: Mikalan
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Rank: Candidate
Location: Will be Malvok Weyr
Personality: Mikalan is a proud young man, prone to keeping his own counsel on things- especially anything controversial. What he says and does isn’t always what he feels, and it can be awfully hard to tell which he’s showing at any given moment. Words aren’t as important to him as actions, and both come secondary to doing what he perceives is necessary. Words are cheap, a tool to use and discard, and Mikalan isn’t afraid to spend them like water in pursuit of a goal. He believes that giving people what they want to hear and see is the best way to deflect their attention from anything he doesn’t want discovered- like his own thoughts and feelings. Part of what make him good at what he does is his excellent emotional control.
Mikalan can get overly impressed with his own cleverness from time to time, enjoying the heady feeling of power that outwitting someone can bring. But he is fairly smart and positively thrives on using his perceptions and intuition to navigate a situation on the fly with only the barebones of a plan in place. He’s secure enough to let things go and roll with the punches, because he has a deep belief that he can always find the right angle to work so he’ll come out on top. He’s tenacious and thorough, willing to put in the time to make something work and figure out how people tick. In his case, curiosity may not have killed the feline yet, but it’s still trying.
Apperance: Mikalan’s light blue eyes sit comfortably in an open, expressive face. The rest of his facial features are pleasant, but unremarkable. His thick brown hair (though cut short for easier maintenance) is often a little tousled, thanks to his habit of running his hands through it. Once in a while he gets frustrated with it and shaves it all off, leaving him a bit odd-looking until it grows back. He’s on the tall side, which accentuates his lanky build. He has a distinctive scar on his left collarbone where the broken bone came through the skin.
History:
Mikalan was born to a pair of farmers in Fort territory, the fifth of seven children. Unfortunately for everyone concerned, he was a a too-bright kid who could run mental rings around his parents and virtually all of his other relatives. Oh he wasn’t a hell-raising terror or anything, but it meant that he grew up with an unhealthy awareness of his own intelligence. By the time he was twelve, he had developed a seething frustration with the duller minds around him and the future that awaited him.
His desperate wish to get off the farm and make better use of his talents elsewhere was answered when a Fort blue Searched him at fifteen. Mikalan packed his bags, cheerfully bid goodbye to his family, and was up on the dragon almost before the rider had finished speaking. The way he figured it, if he didn’t Impress, at least he’d have more opportunities than where he was already at.
Mikalan followed the Weyr back in time with little protest the next Turn. He was apprehensive about standing for the experimental clutch, and his worries proved correct when the Iridescent hatched and he became one of the victims of her search for her rider. He saw a good friend he’d made among the candidates fly headfirst into a nearby egg and break his neck, and the sight froze him long enough to fail to clear the dragon’s path himself. Mikalan’s short-term memory of the incident was damaged and the next thing he remembered was waking up in the infirmary a few days later.
The healers informed him that he’d been tossed into a wall and hit the ground from a worrisome height. He had fractured his left collarbone and dislocated the shoulder, broke his right hip and severely wrenched the knee in the two separate impacts. It took Mikalan a long time to heal from his injuries and several Turns more of physical therapy to approach his pre-hatching condition. He still walks with a limp today and the healers have warned him that arthritis will likely set into the affected joints someday, but he has progressed to the point of being able to do just about anything he used to be able to.
Now that he has mostly healed, Mikalan is truthfully able to say that he doesn’t blame the Iridescent for anything. He never really did- any hatching is potentially dangerous, after all. During his Turns of recovery, he had plenty of time to observe the mutated clutch, listen to the gossip about them, and form his own opinions. He has come to the conclusions that he’s more intrigued by them than frightened of them, that they don’t deserve the treatment they’ve gotten, and that he wants to go with them as a candidate when the time comes.
